Some family meetings or whānau hui are facilitated
under statutory authority. People credited with this unit
standard know all pertinent aspects of legislation that is
relevant to the assessment context. In the context of
this unit standard, relevant legislation may include but is
not limited to: Adoption Act 1955, Children, Young
Persons and Their Families Act 1989, Family
Proceedings Act 1980, Guardianship Act 1968, Mental
Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act
1992, Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act
1988.

Characteristics and needs of the participants may be
physical, spiritual, or mental. Characteristics and needs
include: age and stage of development, culture,
disability, family or whānau roles, professional roles,
gender, health status, language, sexual orientation; and
needs for physical comfort, safety, and privacy.

All communications are treated confidentially. The
scope and limits of confidentiality are defined through
negotiation and informed consent, and criteria
established by legislation, ethical practice, and service
provider guidelines. In the context of this unit standard,
sources of criteria established by legislation, ethical
practice, and service provider guidelines may include
but are not limited to: Adoption Act 1955, Alcoholism
and Drug Addiction Act 1966, Children, Young Persons
and Their Families Act 1989, Criminal Justice Act 1985,
Family Proceedings Act 1980, Guardianship Act 1968,
Health Act 1956, Mental Health (Compulsory
Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992, Official
Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 1993, Protection of
Personal and Property Rights Act 1988, service
provider codes of conduct, codes of practice issued by
the Privacy Commissioner, social service codes of
ethics, and service provider guidelines, protocols, staff
manuals, strategic plans, kawa, or tikanga.

People awarded credit in this unit standard show that
their actions are guided and supported by valid theory
for social service practice. Evidence is required of
social service theory that is derived from authoritative
sources, which may include but are not limited to: body
of knowledge related to social service work; cultural
theory; practice research.
Elements and Performance Criteria

Facilitate opening of the family meeting or whānau hui.
performance criteria
1.1
The welcoming of participants in the family meeting or whānau hui is carried out
according to the kawa or protocol negotiated with the family or whānau.
Range:
welcoming of participants may include but is not limited to - kai,
karakia, karanga, mihi, pōwhiri.
1.2
The roles and functions of participants are clarified according to the nature and
purpose of the family meeting or whānau hui.
1.3
The family or whānau are informed about the outcomes of any prior discussions
regarding the purpose or kaupapa of the meeting or hui.
1.4
Facilitation assists the family or whānau to identify and agree upon the purpose
or kaupapa of the meeting or hui, issues or take to be resolved, and objectives
for the meeting or hui.
1.5
Facilitation enables participants who have information essential to the purpose
or kaupapa of the meeting or hui to make this information available in a manner
that acknowledges the characteristics and needs of the other participants.
1.6
Any statutory provisions that govern the meeting or hui or prescribe any
requirements for task or process are clarified with the family or whānau.

2.1
Facilitation is carried out according to agreement about the role of the facilitator,
and the objectives of the meeting or hui.
2.2
Facilitation focuses on assisting the process of the meeting, maintaining
progress towards achieving agreed objectives, and development of any
required plan.
2.3
Facilitation is appropriate to the characteristics and needs of the participants.
2.4
Facilitation of the meeting or hui is in accordance with any statutory
requirements on the facilitator, participants, or the objectives of the meeting or
hui.
2.5
Facilitation focuses on assisting the meeting or hui to work towards consensus
agreement on plans to achieve objectives.

3.1
Facilitation assists the meeting or hui to work towards consensus agreement on
outcomes of the family meeting or whānau hui.
3.2
The outcomes of the family meeting or whānau hui are recorded according to
agreement with the participants.
3.3
Records include identification of the responsibilities of participants and the
facilitator, and details of the time, date, and venue of any further meeting or hui.
3.4
Closure of the meeting or hui is effected according to the kawa or protocol
negotiated with the family or whānau.
