Construction Club Department of Civil Engineering Eastern Mediterranean University Egg Drop Contest Design your own egg supporting contraption Learning Objectives Innovation and design a contraption able to resist impact of free-fall Group work and discussion. Implementation of Statics load distribution THE RULES The objective is for the contestants to design a contraption which would contain the raw egg placed within to resist breaking upon impact when dropped from certain heights. The contraption should be with respect to the RULE #6. Any contraption not meeting such standards will be disqualified immediately. Rule #1: Groups may not exceed 3 people of which 2 should be civil engineering students. The option to include a student from another department is up to the individuals. Rule #2: The contraption must be able to protect an egg from breaking after falling from a height of 2 meters as a preliminary test. Any egg which doesn’t leak will proceed to the following heights respectively: - First Floor of the Civil Engineering Building - Second floor of the Civil Engineering Building Roof of the Civil Engineering Building Rule #3: The device must meet specific size guidelines which are no bigger than 20cm x 20cm x 20cm. Any device larger than the dimensions specified above will be disqualified. Rule #4: No device may weight more than 1 kilogram. Due to safety reasons any device greater than 1 kg won’t be accepted. Rule #5: The device must not be loaded before the competition. If necessary instructions are to be given to the judges for loading if the contraption on a regular A4 paper along with the group’s number along with their names and student numbers. Rule #6: The following designs are not allowed: - Parachutes Helium Filled Balloons Metals Glass Chemical Containers Styrofoam (with the exception of whole Styrofoam cups) Thick wood (such as 2”x4”) Cotton No super glue allowed Metal screws may be used as hinges but may not be used as the main frame of the contraption. Rule #7: Contestants have the choice of building their contraptions at home before hand or on site. If built on site, the materials provided by the university will be either 25 straws and 1 meter of tape, or 15 sheets of paper and 1 meter of tape and will have an allocated time limit of 1 hour. Note: Preparing the contraption prior to the competition will give an advantage to the contestants as they will be able to use a larger amount as well as more options of materials.
