Definitions
Client requirements refer to the specifications and guidelines that are set out in the specific
instructions on sampling and data collection by the organisation requiring the samples and
data.
Non-fish by-catch refer to other species that are potentially caught as a by-catch of fishing.
These may include but are not limited to - benthos, birds, mammals, turtles.
Non-fish by-catch sampling programmes refers to a scientific investigation based on nonfish by-catch data.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Explain the characteristics of the non-fish by-catch sampling and data collection
programmes in the seafood industry.
Performance criteria
1.1
The explanation includes the purpose of the non-fish by-catch sampling and
data collection programmes.
1.2
The explanation includes examples of the species included in the non-fish bycatch sampling and data collection programmes.
1.3
The explanation includes the sampling plan and data required to be collected by
the non-fish by-catch sampling and data collection programmes.
1.4
The explanation includes the importance of conducting the programmes in
accordance with client requirements.
Element 2
Carry out sampling and data collection of non-fish species associated with fishing
operations.
Range
sampling and data collection for a minimum of 30 fishing days.
Performance criteria
2.1
Data collection and recording of data is in accordance with client requirements.
2.2
Data collection and recording of data is accurate for the non-fish species
observed during the fishing operations.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
