Definitions
Company requirements – include the policies, procedures, and methodologies of the
company. They include requirements documented in company and site health and
safety plans, quality assurance documents, and contract work programmes.
Site procedures – refer to the procedures which are required to be observed for safe
work practices at a particular site.
Job specifications – refer to the documented information found in construction
drawings, project specification documents, legislation, regulations and codes.
Manufacturer recommendations – refer to product information and product data
sheets provided by the manufacturer of any given product.
Health and safety in employment guidelines – refer to the Guidelines for the
Provision of Facilities and General Safety in the Construction Industry, 1995. These
guidelines apply to all construction workplaces. They contain relevant sections of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and regulations, generally accepted good
practice, and references to further information. They are available from the
Occupational Health and Safety Service of the Department of Labour
http://www.osh.govt.nz/.

This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations on residential
and commercial sites.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Confirm materials and availability of equipment for installation of metal roof tiles.
Performance criteria
1.1
Job is assessed and a plan of work is drawn up in accordance with company
requirements.
1.2
Materials confirmed for the job are consistent with the job specifications, NZ
Metal Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice and manufacturer
recommendations.
Range
1.3
includes but is not limited to – metal tiles, cladding, flashings,
sealants, fasteners.
Equipment availability is confirmed in accordance with the job specifications.
Range
includes but is not limited to – scaffolding, ladders, tools, brushes,
sealant gun, saws, roof walking cleats, pop riveter.
Element 2
Complete preparations for the installation of metal roof tiles.
Performance criteria
2.1
Bottom course is set out to manufacturer recommendations and the NZ Metal
Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice.

2.2
Underlay support requirements, where required, are confirmed in accordance
with manufacturer recommendations and the NZ Metal Roof and Wall Cladding
Code of Practice.
Range
2.3

Valley trays, flashings, and vermin proofing are installed in accordance with the
job specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
Element 3
Carry out installation of metal roof tiles.
Performance criteria
3.1
Tiles are laid in the sequence consistent with manufacturer recommendations
and the NZ Metal Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice.
Element 4
Place and finish ridges and barges on metal roof tiles.
Performance criteria
4.1
Ridges and barges are placed and finished to a watertight and secure condition
in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and NZ Metal Roof and
Wall Cladding Code of Practice.
Element 5
Maintain a safe working environment.
Performance criteria
5.1
Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment,
building, or plant in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and
safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.

5.2
Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in
accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
Range
includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety
glasses, gloves, knee pads, high-visibility clothing, safety harness.
5.3
Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are
distributed and erected in accordance with site procedures.
5.4
Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary equipment in accordance
with company requirements.
5.5
Availability of site-specific safety plan is confirmed.
Range
safety plan may include but is not limited to – hazard identification,
working at height, securing loose material, material safety data.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
