It provides requirements for compliance with the Building Act 2004 when constructing a new building or altering an existing one. The Building Code sets out performance standards that building work must meet and covers aspects such as structural stability, fire safety, access, moisture control, durability, and services and facilities. 4 Definitions Industry practice – sound industry practice that meets legislative requirements. Job specifications – refer to the documented information found in construction drawings, project specification documents, legislation, regulations and codes. Site procedures – refer to the procedures which are required to be observed for safe work practices at a particular site. Territorial authorities – city and district councils. 5 This unit standard may be assessed against off-job. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Describe the planning and checks required prior to re-roofing. Performance criteria 1.1 Existing roof inspection activities are described in terms of determining the condition and potential hazards prior to installing the new roof in accordance with industry practice. Range 1.2 includes – brittle materials and asbestos, signs of deterioration, support framing, underlay. Site check activities are described in accordance with site procedures. Range preparing the site, health and safety checks and signs, site hazards. 1.3 Importance of work planning sequence is described in terms of minimising impact to occupants and minimising potential risks of exposure damage to house. 1.4 Purpose of the work sheet, plan, or job schedule is described in terms of defining the work to be done and potential hazards. 1.5 Disposal planning is described for the removed roofing in accordance with site procedures. 1.6 NZBC compliance for re-roofing is described in accordance with territorial authority requirements. Performance criteria 2.1 Process of removing existing fixings and tiles is described in accordance with industry practice. 2.2 Checks and replacements of flashings are described in accordance with industry practice. 2.3 Storage and handling of existing and new roofing tiles is described in terms of industry practice. Element 3 Describe the re-coating procedure for metal tile roofs. Performance criteria 3.1 Re-coating is described in terms of suitability as a roof restoration solution, compared to re-roofing. Element 4 Describe the use of metal tiles as an overlay option on existing roofs. Performance criteria 4.1 The use of metal tiles as an overlay on existing roofs is described in terms of advantages and disadvantages compared to complete re-roofing. Range new tile over old tile, new tile over other existing roof constructions. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
