Special notes
Definitions
Communication systems in the context of this unit standard refers to technology that
permits one and/or two way communications between two or more individuals engaged in
the management of the train. Communication systems may include but are not limited to
VHF radio, UHF radio, telephone, Fleetlink, and Selcall.
Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and
practices; equipment operating instructions; documented quality management systems;
and health and safety requirements.
Rail Operator refers to any holder of a licence granted under section 17 of the Railways
Act 2005.
Train Control is a centre from where the movements of all trains in a specified area are
brought under the direction of a train control officer.

Element 1
Describe a communication system for use within train.
Performance criteria
1.1
Uses of the selected system are described in accordance with organisational
procedures.
1.2
Contingencies available in the event of system failure are identified in
accordance with organisational procedures.
1.3
Operation of the system is described in accordance with organisational
procedures.
Range
incoming communications, outgoing communications, routine
maintenance.
Element 2
Describe communication systems between train and Train Control.
Range
evidence of at least two systems is required.
Performance criteria
2.1
Uses of the system are described in accordance with organisational procedures.
2.2
The description identifies likely users of the system.
2.3
Contingencies available in the event of system failure are identified in
accordance with organisational procedures.
2.4
Operation of the equipment is described in accordance with organisational
procedures.

procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
