This unit standard is for people working as officers in a prison
environment and covers the identification and management of
workplace hazards in a prison.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
 identify and describe prison hazards;
 conduct safety and hazard checks and report breaches;
 implement remedial action to eliminate, isolate, or minimise
hazards and coordinate services; and
 document and report identified hazards.

This unit standard is intended for workplace assessment.

Boundaries of unit standard
This unit standard includes hazards such as those from prison structures and
buildings and also hazards created by anyone such as prisoners, contractors,
visitors.

(PSOM), Department of Corrections (available at

the Department of Corrections Code of Conduct, other documented national
policies and procedures, and prison-specific procedures.

natural hazards, chemicals;
evidence of three is required.

Conduct safety and hazard checks and report breaches.

that reflects the degree of severity of the hazards.

3.2
Maintain personal safety and the safety of others throughout the implementation
of remedial action.
3.3
Describe additional agencies and personnel that may need to be contacted in
relation to any remedial action necessary.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
