Definition
Pork production unit – collective term for several pork production sections. For
example, a farrowing section, a grower section, and a dry sow section together make
up a pork production unit.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Identify facilities and describe equipment used in a pork production unit.
Performance criteria
1.1
Facilities are identified using industry accepted terms in accordance with their
function(s).
Range
1.2
facilities include but are not limited to – farrowing pen, stall, feed
storage, feeding equipment, water supply, housing, sleeping area,
quarantine facility, chemical storage, effluent drain, staff
washroom, paddock, loading race, offal site.
Equipment is described using industry accepted terms in accordance with its
function(s).
Range
equipment and supplies include but are not limited to – vehicles,
feeders, drinkers, hoppers, troughs, heaters, lights, scales, stock
board, drench equipment, squeegee, scraper, cleaners, water
blaster, scoops, ear muffs, dust mask.
Element 2
Identify pig types.
Performance criteria
2.1
Pig types are identified according to class.
Range
2.2
sows, piglets, gilts, boars, weaners, growers, cull pigs, dead pigs.
Pigs on the pork production unit are identified according to genotype.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
