1
Definition
Workplace procedures refer to oral or written instructions to staff on procedures for
the worksite and equipment.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, the Plant
Variety Rights Act 1987; and their subsequent amendments.

Work may involve exposure to chemical, dangerous, or hazardous substances.
Safety procedures are observed in accordance with NZS 8409:2004 Management of
Agrichemicals, available from Standards New Zealand http://standards.co.nz, or the
NZ Agrichemical Education Trust http://growsafe.co.nz/.

Learners should recognise the rights of plant breeders and licensed growers under
the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987, trademarks, copyright, patents or any other
protection method, and understand the responsibilities of propagators to observe
those rights.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Packaging methods and supplies commonly used in nurseries are identified and
their different uses are explained.
Range
1.2
Packaging is selected and prepared for use in terms of suitability for plants,
destination, transport method and in accordance with supplier’s instructions.
Range
1.3
may include pallets, crates, loose packed in transport, cartons,
multiwall or plastic bags, sleeves, promotional pre-packs.
at least two suitable packs or packaging methods are assembled
and prepared for use.
Function of pack or packaging method is stated in terms of protection of
produce, and convenience of handling in terms of the two methods selected.

Pack the product.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Produce is quality control checked in accordance with workplace procedures.
Range
quality control checks include but are not limited to – free from
pest and disease, within grade requirements, healthy plants,
produce numbers checked, paperwork updated.
2.2
Individual labels and promotional materials are completed and attached to the
produce, in accordance with workplace procedures.
2.3
Produce is packed in accordance with workplace procedures.
Outcome 3
Close and stack packed containers.
Evidence requirements
3.1
The container is closed and secured or sealed as appropriate, and in
accordance with workplace procedures.
3.2
Any labels required are completed and attached to the container in accordance
with Plant Variety Rights.
3.3
Any stacking or storage of packed containers prior to dispatch meets
manufacturers specifications and workplace procedures.
3.4
Strapping or shrink-wrapping is applied to pallets or other packaging methods
as required, and in accordance with workplace procedures.

Complete documentation and dispatch.
Evidence requirements
4.1
The documentation for each consignment is completed, attached, filed, or
dispatched as required, in accordance with transport specifications and
workplace procedures.
4.2
The function of each copy of the completed documentation is explained.
4.3
Dispatch arrangements are made in accordance with workplace procedures.
Outcome 5
Maintain an inventory of packaging supplies.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Stocktaking of supplies on hand determines the number available for use.
5.2
Crop estimates are compared to capacity of appropriate packaging on hand,
and any likely shortfall in supplies is reported.
5.3
Pallets or crates are ordered as required, in accordance with workplace
procedures.
5.4
Packaging supplies received are checked in terms of meeting quantity and
quality requirements.
5.5
Packaging supplies are identified and stored so that all types are easily
accessible.
