Learners may have assistance with a trolley to launch and recover the dinghy. If the dinghy is normally sailed by two people, a crew member may assist. In this instance, the learner must take the role of helmsperson and skipper. 6 Performance of this unit standard complies with Yachting New Zealand requirements stated in Yachting New Zealand’s National Sailing Scheme log books. 7 Being in irons refers to when a boat cannot move forward, is unsteerable and the sail flaps in the middle of the boat. Elements and Performance Criteria element 1 Prepare a dinghy for sailing. performance criteria 1.1 Positioning of dinghy on launching trolley centralises dinghy, free of the trolley wheels. 1.2 Rigging of the dinghy is appropriate for the boat class. Range: 1.3 Adjustments to rig and sails suit a variety of wind conditions. Range: 1.4 rigging includes – steering gear, centreboard, mast, sails, sheets. adjustments include settings for wind strengths of up to 10 knots. Transportation of the dinghy to the water’s edge, and launching of the dinghy from both a windward and a lee shore meets Yachting New Zealand requirements. Range: points of sail include – close hauled, beam reach, broad reach, running; requirements include – fore and aft balance, lateral balance, sail trim, maintaining course, centreboard positioning. 2.3 Righting of capsized dinghy meets Yachting New Zealand requirements. 2.4 Recovery from being in irons meets Yachting New Zealand requirements. 2.5 Return to shore is completed safely to Yachting New Zealand requirements. 2.6 De-rigging of dinghy meets Yachting New Zealand requirements. element 3 Manoeuvre a dinghy to rescue a sailor in the water. performance criteria 3.1 Bringing the dinghy to a stop and sailing backwards is completed maintaining full control of the dinghy. 3.2 Dinghy is brought alongside the sailor in the water and stopped safely and smoothly. 3.3 Rescued sailor is brought on board safely, maintaining full control of the dinghy. 3.4 Rescued sailor is returned to his/her boat directly and safely.
