People credited with this unit standard are able to
demonstrate the use of personal and safety items required
for sailing a dinghy, demonstrate the safety features of a
dinghy and how they are used, and plan a short sailing trip of
up to two hours duration.

A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by Sport, Fitness and Recreation
Industry Training Organisation.
special notes:

Assessment of this unit standard must be conducted in
a practical situation, on or around a sailing dinghy.

A sailing dinghy is an open dinghy without ballast,
mainly propelled by sail, and capable of capsizing if
mishandled.

Demonstrate the use of personal and safety items required for sailing a dinghy.
performance criteria
1.1
Clothing worn is appropriate for the class of dinghy sailed and the prevailing
weather conditions.

Personal items carried and used are appropriate for the class of dinghy sailed
and the prevailing weather conditions.

clothing may include but is not limited to – parka, wetsuit, thermal
underwear, woollen/polypropylene jersey, woollen/polypropylene
hat, woollen/polypropylene socks, tracksuit pants, shorts, rash
vest, footwear.
personal items may include but are not limited to – sunscreen,
sunglasses, wind protection, sailing gloves.
Lifejacket or buoyancy aid selected and worn fits correctly and is appropriate for
the individual and the class of dinghy sailed.

Demonstrate the safety features of a dinghy and how they are used.

2.1
Demonstration identifies the buoyancy system and includes performance of presailing checks.

safety features include – painter, method for retaining mast,
method for restraining centreboard, bailer, mainsheet stopper,
rudder and tiller restraints.

Plan a short sailing trip of up to two hours duration.
performance criteria
3.1
Safe trip planning is appropriate to the weather for a range of different weather
conditions.
Range:
3.2
safe trip planning includes – clothing, amount of sail carried,
direction and distance sailed, decision to sail;
weather conditions include – wind strength and direction, state of
the tide.
Planning includes procedure for notification of the sailing trip according to
Yachting New Zealand requirements.
