Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the carding
processes from blended fibre up to the batt prepared for needling; prepare
and operate machines to produce carded batting for mechanically needled
products; identify and correct machine malfunctions and deviations from
product quality; and clean machines and maintain cleanliness in work areas
and machinery.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Describe the carding processes from blended fibre up to the batt prepared for needling.
Performance criteria
1.1
Process line sections are identified and described in terms of their function and
operation.
Range
sections may include but not are not limited to – final blending bin,
chemical additive system, hopper feed system, carding section,
batt forming section, preparation of batt for needling, all ducting
and transfer mediums, fans.
1.2
The purpose of each stage of the process and its importance towards the final
product is described.
1.3
The effects of incorrect blending and contamination in carding processes are
described in terms of product quality.
1.4
Machine and batch information is identified and interpreted from the work
instructions and production batch cards.

Prepare and operate machines to produce carded batting for mechanically needled
products.
Performance criteria
2.1
Machine is prepared for operation in accordance with workplace procedures,
work instructions, and production batch cards.

chemical additives, correct hopper and card roller settings

(if used).
2.2
Start-up sequence for machinery is followed in accordance with machine
requirements and workplace procedures.
2.3
Fibre is fed to the line in accordance with plant operating procedure and

Process interruptions and line faults that affect quality are identified and
corrected in accordance with workplace practice.

Machine malfunction is identified and corrective action is taken in accordance
with workplace procedures.

4.1
Machines are cleaned at the end of a batch in accordance with plant safety
procedures.
4.2
Cleanliness is maintained in work areas and machinery throughout the process
in accordance with workplace procedures.
4.3
The main processing section is cleared of waste fibre in accordance with
workplace procedures.
4.4
Waste fibre is collected and sorted for recycling in accordance with workplace
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
