People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing geometric stairs and balustrades; and manufacture geometric timber stairs, for residential and commercial buildings. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing geometric stairs and balustrades for residential and commercial buildings. Evidence requirements 1.1 The procedure for setting out geometrical stairs and balustrades is described in terms of workplace practices. Range procedure includes but is not limited to – analyse working drawings, establish site conditions, make stair calculations, set quantities of materials, produce set-out. 1.2 The procedure for selecting and machining timber for geometric stairs is described in terms of workplace practices. 1.3 The process of assembling stairs is described in terms of workplace practices. Outcome 2 Manufacture geometric timber stairs for residential and commercial buildings. Evidence requirements 2.1 The type of stair is identified from the working drawings. 2.2 Site conditions are measured and documented in accordance with workplace practice. 2.3 The stair calculations are completed in accordance with workplace practice. 2.4 The quantities of materials are calculated and an order placed in accordance with workplace practice. 2.5 The stair is set out on full-sized formers to conform to the working drawings. 2.6 Stair timber is machined to match full-sized set-out in accordance with workplace practice. 2.7 Joints are worked in accordance with workplace practice. 2.8 Laminations are glued for curved components to conform to the full-sized set-out in accordance with workplace practice. 2.9 Stair components are factory fabricated to the requirements of the working drawings. 2.10 The stair is assembled to conform to the working drawings. 2.11 Handrails and balustrades are assembled, fitted, and fixed in accordance with the working drawings. 2.12 Stairs are finished and protected in accordance with the specifications.
