NZQA registered unit standard 28220 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Manufacture timber stairs for use in residential and commercial buildings Level 4 Purpose Credits 25 This unit standard is for experienced people working in a joinery workshop producing timber stairs. People credited with this unit standard are able to, for residential and commercial buildings: demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for design and manufacture of timber stairs; manufacture timber stairs; and describe the requirements for installing stairs on-site. Classification Joinery > Joinery Operational Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All workplace practices must comply with current legislation, codes of practice, and documented site safety procedures for personal, product, and worksite safety. 2 Legislation and regulations relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. 3 Stairs may include but are not limited to – straight flight, quarter turn, quarter turn with winders, dog-leg, open well; closed string, cut string, and under carriages. Evidence is required of a straight flight of stairs and one other type. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for design and manufacture of timber stairs used in residential and commercial buildings. Evidence requirements 1.1 The type of stair is identified and described from the working drawings. 1.2 Housed string, cut string, and undercarriages are identified and their uses outlined. Outcome 2 Manufacture timber stairs for residential and commercial buildings. Evidence requirements 2.1 The type of stair is identified from the working drawings. 2.2 On-site measurements are confirmed in accordance with workplace practice. 2.3 A cutting list is completed for material requirements in accordance with workplace practice. 2.4 The stairs are set out to conform to the working drawings and the specifications. 2.5 Timber is machined to conform to the housings or cut strings, and joints are worked in accordance with workplace practice. 2.6 Stair is assembled and finished in accordance with workplace practice. 2.7 Handrails and balustrades are machined and assembled, where required, to conform to the working drawings. Outcome 3 Describe the requirements for installing stairs on-site in residential and commercial buildings. Evidence requirements 3.1 The requirements for stairs are described in accordance with working drawing specifications. 3.2 The procedures for trimming and installing stairs are described in accordance with the working drawings and workplace practice. 3.3 The procedures for trimming and finishing stairs are described in accordance with workplace practice.
