Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people who are members of the Sea Cadet
Corps of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. People credited with this unit
standard are able to demonstrate basic knowledge of sea navigational aids,
and demonstrate basic plotting of courses for NZCF activities.

This unit standard is designed for SCC cadets to assess their corps specific (sea)
knowledge of navigational theory. It may lead to practical application, which is not
assessed against in this unit standard.

All knowledge and practice requirements must comply with the policy and training
manuals for NZCF, RNZN, NZA and/or RNZAF.

Training manuals relevant to this unit standard include NZCF manuals 155 (SCC),
157 (ATC), and 158 (Navigation). Training manuals are available from the NZCF,
New Zealand Defence Force Headquarters, Private Bag, Wellington.

Definitions
ATC is the Air Training Corps of NZCF;
NZA is the New Zealand Army;
NZCF is the New Zealand Cadet Forces;
RNZN is the Royal New Zealand Navy;
RNZAF is the Royal New Zealand Air Force;
SCC is the Sea Cadet Corps of NZCF.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate basic knowledge of sea navigational aids.
Performance criteria
1.1
Route planning aids are described in terms of their principal functions.
Range
1.2
includes maritime chart, compass rose, parallel rulers.
Field based navigational aids are described in terms of their principal functions.
Range
includes buoys, beacons.
Element 2
Demonstrate basic plotting of courses for NZCF activities.
Performance criteria
2.1
Three separate courses are plotted using a marine chart.
Range
each course must include a minimum of two legs.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
