People awarded credit for this unit standard are able to
demonstrate knowledge of the meaning of the articles
of the Treaty of Waitangi for human service purposes,
and are able to apply this knowledge to the context of
assessment for this unit standard.

The following apply to the performance of all elements
of this unit standard:

All activities must comply with any policies,
procedures, ethical codes and standards and
requirements of the organisations involved.

All activities must comply with any relevant
cultural, legislative and/or regulatory requirements
including the rights and responsibilities of the
disabled as outlined in the Code of Health and
Disability Services Consumers’ Rights 1996, and
the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992,
Human Rights Act 1993, Privacy Act 1993, and
any subsequent amendments.

paramount.

Assessment can take place through a simulated
exercise eg an assignment or a case study.

NZS 8134:2001 Health and Disability Sector Standards
and any subsequent amendments.

Recognised grief models include but are not limited to
those developed by Ruth Bright, Kubler Ross,
Wordens.

Demonstrate knowledge of responding to a staff member experiencing a situation of loss

1.1
Situations of loss and grief in a human services setting are identified in terms of
type.
Range:
1.2
minimum of four situations of loss and grief which may include but
are not limited to – abuse, disability death, attempted suicide,
family/whanau changes, accident.
Situations are analysed in terms of workplace ethics and procedures for
responding to loss and grief in a human services setting.

Support services available are analysed in terms of their availability and
appropriateness for a staff member experiencing loss and grief.
Range:
evidence is required in relation to two situations of loss and grief
from the range in 1.1.

Analysis of the situation is in terms of the stages of the grief process and any
one recognised grief model.
1.5
Analysis identifies personal and professional boundaries relating to dealing with
loss and grief in a human services setting.
1.6
Analysis identifies risks related to situations of loss and grief in a human
services setting.
Range:
people experiencing loss and grief, the person experiencing the
loss, the family/whanau of the person experiencing the loss, the
safety of the human services worker, legal liability, professional
liability.

and grief situation.

Response is in accordance with the workplace ethics and procedures in a
human services setting.
2.3
Response is in accordance with personal and professional boundaries relating
to dealing with loss and grief in a human services setting.
