Purpose
This unit standard is for people involved with the organisation of numbers of
horses at morning workouts on racetracks.
People credited with this unit standard are able to assess racetrack condition,
and report open tracks; and supervise horses entering and leaving the track
to ensure safety for all users.

All work practices must meet codes of practice and documented worksite safety
procedures for personal, and worksite safety, and must meet the obligations of
legislation which includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.

be obtained from the secretary of the racing club where horses are working.

Race club procedures are the documented practices and polices required within a
particular workplace, and do not contravene the Code of Recommendations and
Minimum Standards for Welfare of Horses. (Wellington: Ministry of Agriculture and
Forestry, 1993); or available at h://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/animalwelfare/codes/horses/index.htm
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Assess racetrack condition, and report open tracks.
Performance criteria
1.1
Track condition is assessed according to current weather condition, and
suitability for morning use is determined.
Range
1.2
surface moisture, subsurface moisture, length of ground cover,
potential damage, time taken to repair.
Notification of track condition is posted to all users on designated track
noticeboard according to Racetrack Bylaws.
Element 2
Supervise horses entering and leaving the track to ensure safety for all users.
Performance criteria
2.1
Information is obtained from riders entering track in terms of the proposed
workout and documented in accordance with race club procedures.
2.2
Riders are directed onto the track in a manner that ensures horses are worked
without causing interference to each other according to Racetrack Bylaws, and
number of current track users.
2.3
Unsafe riding is reported to track manager according to race club procedures.
Range
2.4
passing on wrong side, wrong place on track, riding at pace not
previously specified, horse out of control.
Unsafe riding is documented according to race club procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
