Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry who wish to
design and compete in a hairstyling competition.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of
live competition styling and photographic competition styling.

Definitions
Competition event requirements means event rules as described in the latest edition
of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers Inc. Competition
Handbook, published annually.
Final presentation means models presented in a completed form for a presentation
event or submitted as a photo for a photographic event.

Range
Evidence must be provided for competing in one event within a 5 year period for
which credit is sought. Presentation only events are not included as evidence.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of live competition styling.
Performance criteria
1.1
Live competition styling, including cutting styling and evening styling on female
models, is described in terms of model selection, clothing selection, preparation
work, and final presentation.
1.2
Live competition styling using female models is described in terms of
competition event requirements.
1.3
Live competition styling, including cutting on male models, is described in terms
of model selection, clothing selection, preparation work, and final presentation.
1.4
Live competition styling using male models is described in terms of competition
event requirements.
Element 2
Demonstrate knowledge of photographic competition styling.
Performance criteria
2.1
Photographic competition styling is described in terms of model selection,
preparation, make-up selection, clothing, accessories, and final presentation.
2.2
Photographic competition styling is described in terms of photographic shoot
details.
Range
selection of photographer, camera, film type, black and white,
colour, angles, lighting, size, gloss, matt, location and backdrop.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
