Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry who wish to
further develop their long hair styling and maintenance skills.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to dress long hair
into complex styles; dress long hair into complex styles; and complete followup actions.

workplace requirements mean the practices prescribed by management as being the
quality standards for client contact and work organisation for a particular salon;
complex styles refer to a classic French roll, and any style that incorporates a
combination of at least three elements and/or techniques and is suitable for special
occasions. It excludes the use of ponytails, and styles from Unit 25792, Dress long
hair into elementary styles.

The classic French roll must include back combing.

Assessment against this unit standard requires evidence of a full head classic French
roll and at least one other complex style, for which a minimum of 75% of the hair
must be up. No hair pieces, extensions or accessories may be used.

In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must
ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare to dress long hair into complex styles.
Performance criteria
1.1
Consultation with the client identifies and confirms work needed.
1.2
The hair and scalp are analysed.
Range
porosity, elasticity, texture, density, length, scalp conditions,
growth patterns.
1.3
The style to be dressed is selected in accordance with confirmed outcome and
compatibility with hair and scalp analysis.
1.4
The client is protected against water and/or product spillage.
1.5
Hair is prepared for dressing in accordance with confirmed outcome.
Range
may include but is not limited to – shampooing, blow drying,
setting, straightening, hot rollers.

Element 2
Dress long hair into complex styles.
Performance criteria
2.1
Styling aids are selected and used to produce the selected style without
damaging hair.
Range
may include – back combing, clips, product.
2.2
Hair is dressed and finished using techniques that achieve confirmed outcome.
2.3
Hair is dressed and finished within forty-five minutes.
Element 3
Complete follow-up actions.
Performance criteria
3.1
Specialised long hair home haircare advice provided is consistent with hair type
and completed service.
Range

3.2
Tools and equipment are sanitised in accordance with workplace requirements.
3.3
The work area is cleaned and tidied in accordance with workplace
requirements.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
