This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry who
wish to gain basic knowledge of hair colour and develop skills
in applying hair colour.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of colour and non-oxidative colour; prepare to apply
and apply non-oxidative hair colour; and complete follow-up
actions.

Definitions
legislative requirements refer to the obligations of the employer and/or employee
under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health (Hairdressers)
Regulations 1980;
non-oxidative hair colour refers to temporary colour and semi-permanent colour;
temporary colour refers to water-based product;
semi-permanent colour refers to a colour that lasts 4-6 washes and does not require
mixing with a developer;
following service may include but is not limited to – haircut, blow wave.

In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must
ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.

This unit standard does not include midway, permanent hair colour, or bleaching.
Most people will however go on to seek credit for Unit 19791, Select and apply
midway hair colour.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of colour and non-oxidative colour.

1.1
The origin of colour is explained in terms of reflection and absorption.
1.2
The colour wheel, and all its components, is drawn and explained in terms of
colour type.

primary, secondary, tertiary, counter colours.
1.3
Non-oxidative colour is described in terms of its effect on the hairshaft.
1.4
The characteristics of non-oxidative hair colour are described in terms of its use
and effect.
Outcome 2
Prepare to apply non-oxidative hair colour.
