7654 version 4 Page 1 of 4 Seam metal containers for food or related products using automated seaming equipment Level 2 Credits 2 Purpose This unit standard is intended for those who are currently working, or intend to work, in jobs which involve seaming metal containers for food or related products using automated seaming equipment. People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe working practices; prepare to seam metal containers for food or related products; and operate and maintain automated seaming equipment. Related products refer to beverages, household or personal care products. 3 Range Competence is to be demonstrated for the development, implementation, and evaluation of at least two packaging line operations plans. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Use safe working practices. Performance criteria 1.1 PPE is used in accordance with organisational procedures. 1.2 Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 1.3 hazards to – personnel, product, plant. Documentation is referred to and/or completed in accordance with organisational procedures. Element 2 Prepare to seam metal containers for food or related products. Performance criteria 2.1 Seaming preparation is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures. 2.2 Seaming equipment is set up and confirmed as operational in accordance with organisational procedures. Range set up may include but is not limited to – oil level, fill weight, net weight, product code, steam vacuum, head space. 2.3 Can conveyor race is confirmed as being in correct position and operational in accordance with organisational procedures. 2.4 Seaming equipment speed is set to match speed of downstream operations in accordance with organisational procedures. Range downstream operations may include but are not limited to – cookers, craters, coolers. Range 2.6 correct type, quantity. Product for seaming is checked in accordance with organisational procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – correct type, quantity, quality. Element 3 Operate and maintain automated seaming equipment. Performance criteria 3.1 Operation of seaming equipment is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.2 Seaming equipment speed matches speed of downstream operations in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 3.3 downstream operations may include but are not limited to – cookers, craters, coolers. Maintenance of services to seaming equipment is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures. Range services may include but are not limited to – oil, steam, compressed air. 3.4 Production down time due to seaming equipment operation and maintenance is minimised in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.5 Product wastage due to operation of seaming equipment is minimised in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.6 Variations in specified technical performance of seaming equipment are identified, rectified and/or reported in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 3.7 variations may include but are not limited to – sound of machine, safety, speed, quality, reliability. Seamed containers are checked in accordance with product specifications, legislative requirements and organisational procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – seal shape, seal tightness, head space, fill weight, net weight, product code, lids, product. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
