20943 version 2 Page 1 of 4 Pack filled liquid food or related product containers using automated packaging equipment Level 2 Credits 2 Purpose This unit standard is intended for those who are currently working, or intend to work, in jobs which involve the packing of liquid food or related product containers using automated packaging equipment. People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe working practices; prepare to pack liquid food or related product containers; and operate liquid food or related product automated packaging equipment. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 20943 version 2 Page 2 of 4 2 Definitions Containers refer to filled and closed glass, plastic, or metal containers containing liquid foods, beverages, household or personal care products. Equipment refers to multi-head packaging equipment. Liquid foods refer to sauces, soups, and gravies. Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications; documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements. Packaging materials refer to pre-formed cardboard cartons, dividers, glue, adhesive tape. PPE refers to personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to: protective clothing; gloves; safety glasses, headwear, and footwear; hearing protection; safety devices. 3 Range Competence is to be demonstrated on at least two occasions of packing liquid food or related products using automated packaging equipment. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Use safe working practices. Performance criteria 1.1 PPE is used in accordance with organisational procedures. 1.2 Work environment is kept clean and free from hazards in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 1.3 hazards to – personnel, product, plant. Documentation is referred to and/or completed in accordance with organisational procedures. Element 2 Prepare automated packaging equipment to pack filled liquid food or related product containers. Performance criteria 2.1 Packing preparation is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures. 2.2 Check automated packaging equipment is set up and confirmed as operational in accordance with organisational procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – glue temperature, air pressure. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 20943 version 2 Page 3 of 4 2.3 Sensors are checked to ensure they are unobstructed, aligned, and operational in accordance with organisational procedures. 2.4 Packaging materials are checked to ensure they are in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 2.5 correct type, condition, quantity. Filled containers for packing are checked to ensure they are in accordance with organisational procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – quantity, quality. Element 3 Operate liquid food or related product automated packaging equipment. Performance criteria 3.1 Operation of equipment is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.2 Glue level is maintained in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.3 Packaging material jams are identified, and are cleared to optimise production and minimise danger to operator in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.4 Packaging material changeovers are made with minimal disruption to production in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.5 Container and packaging material wastage due to operation of automated packaging equipment is minimised in accordance with organisational procedures. 3.6 Variations in specified technical performance of automated equipment are identified, rectified and/or reported in accordance with organisational procedures. Range 3.7 variations may include but are not limited to – sound of machine, safety, speed, quality, reliability. Packaged containers are checked to ensure they are in accordance with organisational procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – quantity, quality, presentation. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
