Such work must not require any immediate adjustment. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Restrain and prepare the horse for attending to its feet. Range catch in paddock, catch in stable, catch in yard. Performance criteria 1.1 Horse is caught in a manner that does not endanger the person or the horse. Range 1.2 gain initial attention, approach, initial restraint. Solutions for catching difficult horses are demonstrated in accordance with the situation. Range using feed, body position, extra people, smaller area, verbal encouragement. 1.3 Halter is fitted in a manner which maintains control at all times, and with the horse calm throughout the procedure. 1.4 Horse is led in different situations while maintaining control at all times in a manner which is safe for the horse and the handler. Range 1.5 through gates which are opened then shut, through stable doors which are opened then shut, into and out of a yard. Horse is tied in a safe place, with sufficient length of rope for the horse to remain in a comfortable position while standing. Range quick release knot, bowline, double half hitch. Element 2 Assess the horse’s leg and hoof conformation, and dress the feet. Range fore feet, hind feet. Performance criteria 2.1 Assessment of horse's leg and hoof conformation and action identifies stance, balance, and movement. Range 2.3 present performance, present environment, past injury. Hoof wall is dressed to remove excess growth in accordance with the balance of the hoof capsule, and intended use of the horse. Range to be reshod, to remain unshod, future performance, past performance. 2.4 Trimming of the seat of the corn and excessive sole and frog results in a level bearing surface. 2.5 The leg is brought forward in a manner which is comfortable for the horse, and any flare or excessive horn is dressed from the hoof capsule in accordance with industry standards. 2.6 'Balancing' of feet by rasping compensates for conformation faults while maintaining natural stance. 2.7 Behaviour problems which prevent effective foot preparation are corrected firmly but without causing stress to the horse. Range restlessness, leaning, biting, kicking, striking. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
