Range catch in – paddock, stable, yard. Performance criteria 1.1 Horse is caught in a manner that does not endanger the person or the horse. Range 1.2 gain initial attention, approach, initial restraint. Solutions for catching difficult horses are demonstrated in accordance with the situation. Range using feed, body position, extra people, smaller area, verbal encouragement. 1.3 Halter is fitted in a manner which maintains control at all times, and with the horse calm throughout the procedure. 1.4 Horse is led in different situations while maintaining control at all times in a manner which is safe for the horse and the handler. Range 1.5 through gates which are opened then shut, through stable doors which are opened then shut, into and out of a yard. Horse is tied in a safe place, with sufficient length of rope for the horse to remain in a comfortable position while standing. Range quick release knot, bowline, double half hitch. Element 2 Remove front and hind shoes from a horse. Performance criteria 2.1 Foot is picked up and held in a position which is comfortable for the horse and handler. 2.2 Clinch heads are lifted or removed without causing damage to the hoof. Range clenches cut cleanly, clenches straightened with buffer. Range 2.4 with pincers from heel to toe alternately from inside branch to outside branch. Examination of the hoof determines the presence of hoof problems. Range cracks, bruising, separation, penetration. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
