Industry standards are defined as work having been performed within Occupational
Safety and Health (OSH) regulations, and performed in a timely manner, which has
an economic outcome for the farrier. Such work must not require any immediate
adjustment.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Restrain and prepare the horse for attending to its feet.
Range
catch in – paddock, stable, yard.
Performance criteria
1.1
Horse is caught in a manner that does not endanger the person or the horse.
Range
1.2
gain initial attention, approach, initial restraint.
Solutions for catching difficult horses are demonstrated in accordance with the
situation.
Range
using feed, body position, extra people, smaller area, verbal
encouragement.
1.3
Halter is fitted in a manner which maintains control at all times, and with the
horse calm throughout the procedure.
1.4
Horse is led in different situations while maintaining control at all times in a
manner which is safe for the horse and the handler.

through gates which are opened then shut, through stable doors
which are opened then shut, into and out of a yard.
Horse is tied in a safe place, with sufficient length of rope for the horse to
remain in a comfortable position while standing.

quick release knot, bowline, double half hitch.
Element 2
Remove front and hind shoes from a horse.
Performance criteria
2.1
Foot is picked up and held in a position which is comfortable for the horse and
handler.
2.2
Clinch heads are lifted or removed without causing damage to the hoof.

clenches cut cleanly, clenches straightened with buffer.

Shoe is loosened and removed maintaining foot in natural holding position, and
in accordance with industry standards.
Range

with pincers from heel to toe alternately from inside branch to
outside branch.
Examination of the hoof determines the presence of hoof problems.
