Range
ignition devices – piezo, manual spark, automatic spark, hot surface, flash tube;
pressure control devices – pressure regulators, relief valves, over pressure protection
device, under pressure protection device;
flame failure devices – thermoelectric, flame rectification, photocell detection;
thermostats – rod and tube, bi-metal switch, liquid expansion, thermister;
other control devices including but not limited to – vitiation cutoffs, tip-over switches,
pressure switches, solenoids, overheat protection devices.

Credit for this unit standard does not entitle the candidate to legally perform certain
aspects of this work unless registered or supervised by a registered person under the
provisions of the Electricity Act 1992.

This unit standard requires the application of theory as included in the Plumbers,
Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Regulations 1977. These Regulations are currently under
review to align them with the newer Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.

Maintain may refer to all or any of – repair, upgrade, alter, remove, survey.
Other services refers to any existing installed services.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Identify and test control and safety devices in gas appliances.
Performance criteria
1.1
Control and safety devices are identified in terms of their type and functions.
1.2
Control and safety devices are tested in accordance with the type of device.
1.3
Test of control and safety devices determines their serviceability.
Element 2
Maintain control and safety devices in gas appliances.
Performance criteria
2.1
Control and safety devices are assessed in accordance with maintenance
requirements.
2.2
Faults are identified in terms of the fault and possible means of rectification.
2.3
Faults are rectified in accordance with maintenance requirements.

2.4
Control and safety devices are recommissioned and retested in accordance with
maintenance requirements and relevant standard and codes.
Element 3
Work safely and with care.
Performance criteria
3.1
Practical activities are carried out avoiding harm to people and damage to
property, other services, materials, tools, and equipment.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
