Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work, in
any kind of fruit production. People credited with this unit
standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of pests,
diseases, and disorders in a fruit sector, and recognise pests,
diseases, and disorders in a fruit sector.

Explanatory notes
A fruit sector is a sector of the fruit production industry such as pip fruit (apples and pears),
kiwifruit, citrus, stonefruit (summerfruit), or subtropicals (such as avocados, tamarillos and
passionfruit).
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of pests, diseases, and disorders in a fruit sector.
Range
a minimum of six pests, four diseases, and three disorders.
Evidence requirements
1.1
When particular pests, diseases, or disorders may be affecting crops in a fruit
sector is stated in terms of signs and symptoms.
1.2
The stage of the life cycle at which pests or pathogens are likely to be identified
is stated, and stages that are particularly susceptible, or resistant to control
measures, are noted respectively.
Outcome 2
Recognise pests, diseases, and disorders in a fruit sector.
Evidence requirements
2.1
A hand lens is used to detect the presence of named, significant pests or
disease for a fruit sector.

2.2
Ten common pests, diseases, and disorders that may affect a specific fruit in
one area of fruit production are recognised.
2.3
The stage of the life cycle at which pests or pathogens are is stated, and stages
that are particularly susceptible, or resistant to control measures, are identified.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.
