This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work,
in any kind of horticulture. People credited with this unit
standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of pruning and
training vines; train and prune vines for the first three years;
prune mature vines according to a training system; and
dispose of prunings.

The effects of apical dominance are explained in terms of vine growth.

How plant wounds callus and heal are explained in terms of plant health.

1.3
Training systems are described in terms of structures and the vines for which
they are most suitable.
Range:
1.4
vertical trellis, Scott Henry, double curtain, T-bar, pergola.
Leaders, crowns, fruit arms, laterals, and water shoots are identified with a
description of their functions on the vine.

Train and prune vines for the first three years.
Range:
evidence can be obtained by pruning and training vines of one, two, and three
years of age in the same pruning season.

Main trunk is supported until it reaches its wire in accordance with the training
system to be used and workplace procedures.
2.2
Leaders are developed and held along the wires in accordance with the training
system to be used and workplace procedures.
2.3
Unwanted canes are removed in accordance with the training system to be
used and workplace procedures, and wanted canes are held so that they do not
become over-twisted or blown off.

Prune mature vines according to a training system.

3.1
Fruitful and unfruitful wood are distinguished between, and unfruitful wood is
removed in accordance with target crop loading.
3.2
Access is enhanced by spacing of producing canes.
3.3
Diseased, damaged, or pest infested wood is removed in accordance with
workplace procedures.

3.4
Replacement cycles for framework wood are set up in accordance with
workplace procedures.
3.5
Hygiene and other disease prevention measures are undertaken in accordance
with workplace policy and procedures.
3.6
Vines are summer pruned or leaf plucked to enhance fruit colour, maturation,
and future bud development.

Dispose of prunings.

4.1
Management options for prunings disposal are described in terms of the
advantages and disadvantages of each method.
4.2
Prunings are removed and disposed of in accordance with workplace policy and
procedures, or mulched where they lie.
