Purpose
Possession of the National Certificate in Footwear (Level 4) recognises that the holder has
a wide range of shoemaking knowledge and practical skills. In addition to a detailed
departmental knowledge through one of the strands, the holder will have knowledge of the
skills required in other shoemaking departments, general shoe construction and
manufacturing knowledge together with the ability to specify material and component
requirements, and personnel leadership and management skills.
Whilst there is some overlap with the National Certificate in Footwear (Level 3) with
strands in Clicking, Closing, Bottom Stock, and Making and Lasting [Ref: 0225], this
level 4 national certificate will be evidence that the holder has the ability to sustain a range
of management responsibilities beyond that required in an individual shoemaking
department.
Special Notes
It is recommended that candidates already hold the following qualification:

National Certificate in Footwear (Level 3) with strands in Clicking, Closing, Bottom
Stock, and Making and Lasting [Ref: 0225];
or have demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and
retain their identification number (Id). Any version of a standard with the same Id may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the Id and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
