This unit standard is for people working in the embalming
industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and
adhere to the legal requirements of operating and maintaining a
mortuary; apply personal hygiene requirements for working in a
mortuary; and apply maintenance practices for a mortuary.

Evidence requirements
1.1
The relevant legal requirements are identified and adhered to in operating and
maintaining a mortuary.
Range
requirements include but are not limited to – Building Act, Health
and Safety in Employment Act, Resource Management Act, Health
Act, territorial authority bylaws.
1.2
Dangerous and hazardous chemicals are stored in accordance with legislative
requirements.
1.3
Personal effects of the deceased are stored or disposed of in accordance with
legislative requirements.
Range
personal effects may include but are not limited to – jewellery,
clothing, money, personal items.
Outcome 2
Apply personal hygiene requirements for working in a mortuary.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Personal hygiene is maintained in a mortuary in accordance with legislative
requirements.
Range
personal hygiene includes but is not limited to – hand washing,
change of clothing, full skin coverage (gown, gloves), facial
protection, respiratory protection.
Outcome 3
Apply maintenance practices for a mortuary.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Mortuary equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s
specifications.
3.2
Mortuary equipment is serviced, maintained and stored in accordance with
manufacturer’s specifications and legislative requirements.
3.3
Mortuary is sterilised and disinfected in accordance with legislative
requirements.

before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
