NZQA Expiring unit standard 5877 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of manufactured textile fibres Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: the production of manufactured textile fibres; manufactured fibres in terms of their properties and use; and manufactured textile fibre identification tests. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Core Yarn Processing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard recognises knowledge of manufactured textile fibres commonly used in the New Zealand textile industry, it builds on the knowledge covered by Unit 19841, Demonstrate elementary knowledge of the operations, processes and products of textile manufacturing. Unit 5876, Demonstrate knowledge of natural textile fibres, covers the range of animal and vegetable fibres. 2 The term ‘manufactured textile fibres’ relates to all of those fibres variously known as synthetic fibres or man-made fibres, and covers the synthetic polymer fibres and the regenerated natural polymer fibres generally known as regenerated cellulose. 3 Information to support the learning required for this standard can be obtained from papers and articles published by AgResearch. These may be obtained by contacting AgResearch http://www.agresearch.co.nz and searching using the keyword Textiles. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the production process of manufactured textile fibres. Evidence requirements 1.1 The method of producing manufactured fibres is described in terms of the chemicals used, and the extrusion process. Range 1.2 fibres – polyamides, polyester, acrylic, polypropylene, viscose; extrusion process – wet spinning, dry spinning, melt spinning. Post-extrusion processes are described in terms of their function and operation, and the changes imparted to the fibre by the processes. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard Range 5877 version 7 Page 2 of 3 post-extrusion processes – drawing, conversion of tow to staple, texturising, production of high-bulk. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of manufactured fibres in terms of their properties and use. Range nylon 6, nylon 6.6, polyester, acrylic, polypropylene, viscose, elastomeric. Evidence requirements 2.1 Manufactured fibres are described and compared in terms of their elementary properties and end uses. Range properties – strength and elasticity, moisture absorbency and regain, thermoplasticity, thermal properties, dye affinity, reaction to chemicals; end uses – two end uses that illustrate the typical textile use of the fibre. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of manufactured textile fibre identification tests. Evidence requirements 3.1 Tests used to identify manufactured textile fibres are described in terms of the way the test is carried out and the characteristic results for each fibre. Range fibres – nylon 6, nylon 6.6, polyester, acrylic, polypropylene, viscose; tests – visual, chemical, physical. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
