Purpose
This unit standard is for people who have an interest in the
manufacture of carpets. People credited with this unit standard
are able to distinguish between carpet types, and demonstrate
elementary knowledge of: fibres used in carpet manufacture;
carpet construction; and carpet performance and use.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Carpet texture and surface effects are described and distinguished between in
terms of the pile construction.

Demonstrate elementary knowledge of fibres used in carpet manufacture.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Major fibres used in carpet manufacture are described in terms of the properties
they impart to the carpet.
Range
fibres – wool, polypropylene, nylon, polyester, melt bond polyester,
antistatic, blends of these fibres;
properties – wear, appearance, handle, cost.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate elementary knowledge of carpet construction.

3.1
Construction parameters are described in terms of their relationship with the
carpet structure.

Carpet construction is described in terms of the pile formation cycle.

general terms – stitch, pile, stitch length, pile density, pile height,
pile weight, broadloom, narrow loom, yarn count, yarn ply, yarn
twist;
tufting terms – gauge, stitch rate;
weaving terms – warp, weft, chain warp, stuffer warp, pitch, beatup.
hand knotted, tufted loop pile, tufted cut pile, spool axminster,
gripper axminster, wilton.
The production sequence is described in terms of the production steps and the
reason for carrying out each step.
Range
tufted – creel or beam, tuft, inspect and mend, shear, latex and
back, inspect and grade, roll and pack;
woven – creel and beam, weave, brush and shear, mend,
backsize, inspect, roll and pack.
Outcome 4
Demonstrate elementary knowledge of carpet performance and use.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Factors to be considered in choosing a carpet are described in terms of their
effect on carpet performance and choice.

an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
