This unit standard is intended for, but not restricted to, workplace assessment. The
range statements within the unit standard can be applied according to industry
specific equipment, procedures and processes.

safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop and the candidate will be
assessed as not yet competent.

‘Industry requirements’ include all the documented workplace policies, procedures,
specifications, business and quality management requirements relevant to the
workplace in which assessment is carried out.

The term ‘operate’ is defined as manual operation and testing of thermal electricity
generation plant including plant adjustments, isolations and restorations.

Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of coal firing systems and controls.
Performance criteria
1.1
The location, operation and components of plant coal firing system, including
coal pulverisation, are described in accordance with industry requirements.

Coal firing controls are described in accordance with industry requirements.

includes but is not limited to – bunkers, flow detectors, feeder inlet
gates, feeders, mills, mill discharge valves, seal air fans, primary
air fans, primary air heater, hot and cold air dampers, placing the
first mill in service.

conveyor, mill rejects.
Operating parameters are identified in accordance with industry requirements.

testing, mill starting and stopping when other mills are in service,
visual check of furnace condition, damper operation, mill reject
hopper emptying, pre-start checks.

Operating decisions are determined in accordance with plant status and
industry requirements.

Identify and respond to deviations in the normal operation of coal firing.

3.1
Deviations from normal operating conditions are identified, logged and acted
upon in accordance with industry requirements.
Range
3.2
includes but is not limited to – coal leaks, abnormal mill operation,
coal quality.
Plant safety, fire and emergency procedures and rules are described and
followed in accordance with industry requirements.
Range
includes but is not limited to – feeder and mill blockages, coal
equipment fires, site evacuation procedure, safety rules for
confined space entry, safety rules associated with gas hazard
areas.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
