NZQA registered unit standard 10421 version 5 Page 1 of 4 Title Service water turbines in electricity supply power plants Level 3 Credits 6 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the principles of operation of water turbines; and plan, service, test, and report a routine service on water turbines. Classification Electricity Supply > Electricity Supply - Power System Maintenance Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 2395, Select, use and care for, engineering hand tools; and Unit 2396, Select, use and maintain portable hand held engineering power tools; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is intended for, but not restricted to, workplace assessment. The range statements within the unit standard can be applied according to industry specific equipment, procedures and processes. 2 Safety of personnel and plant must be a priority throughout the assessment. If the safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop. 3 Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes and evidence requirements must comply with all current legislation, especially the Electricity Act 1992, and any regulations and codes of practice recognised under that statute; the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; and the Resource Management Act 1991. Electricity supply industry codes of practice and documented industry procedures include the current version of the Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI) Wellington: Electricity Engineers’ Association. A full list of current legislation and industry codes is available from the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation, PO Box 1245, Hamilton 3240. 4 The phrase in accordance with industry requirements is implicit in all outcomes and evidence requirements in this unit standard. Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101813 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 10421 version 5 Page 2 of 4 5 Industry requirements include all asset owner requirements; manufacturers’ specifications; and enterprise requirements which cover the documented workplace policies, procedures, specifications, business, and quality management requirements relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out. 6 This unit standard includes – wicket gates, gate links swing ring, trunnion assembly, stay rings and vanes, shear pins, runner, top cover, vacuum breaker, turbine seals. 7 This unit standard excludes turbine bearings. 8 The term service includes preventative maintenance, inspections, cleaning, monitoring, and checking of generation plant and equipment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of operation of water turbines in electricity supply power plants. Range Francis, Kaplan, Pelton, bulb turbines. Evidence requirements 1.1 The principles of water turbine operation are described and defined. 1.2 Water turbine construction and components are described. Outcome 2 Plan service requirements for water turbines in electricity supply power plants. Evidence requirements 2.1 Work plans are prepared. 2.2 Prepared plans identify all necessary procedures and resources required for the service. 2.3 Work plans and specifications are complete, concise, and legible, and reflect identified hazards. Identified hazards are eliminated, isolated, or minimised. 2.4 Work plans and specifications are made available for all personnel involved in implementing the plans within the scheduled time-frame. Range one turbine from – vertical or horizontal Francis, Kaplan, Pelton, bulb turbines. Evidence requirements 3.1 Isolations are checked. 3.2 Water turbines and components requiring service are identified. 3.3 Water turbines and components are serviced. Range 3.4 conduct in-service visual inspections for damage and defects; lubricate as per schedules seals, linkages, and swing ring; check fixtures and mountings for security; check identification labelling record condition monitoring data, vacuum, temperatures, and pressures; clear drains and ejectors; check packings. Service activities and resources are co-ordinated throughout the duration of the work to minimise disruption to personnel, plant, electricity generation, and the environment. Outcome 4 Test water turbines in electricity supply power plants. Range test run, test readings, noise. Evidence requirements 4.1 Tests are carried out in accordance with the prepared work plan. Outcome 5 Report a routine service. Range service report, job sheet, daily diary, log book, test reports and results, plant history, authorisations, ‘as-built’ drawings. Evidence requirements 5.1 Reported information is completed and actioned. 5.2 Maintenance information is recorded in the agreed format and filed within the scheduled time-frame. 5.3 Any further action required for plant and equipment is identified, recorded, and communicated to appropriate personnel. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
