This unit standard is for people engaged in the manufacture of
electric switchboards, and covers knowledge and practice
related to receiving and handling switchboard equipment
safely.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–
receive and unpack switchgear equipment; and
–
manoeuvre switchgear equipment and switchboards
safely.

Definitions
Industry practice – practice used and recommended by organisations involved in the
electrotechnology industry.
Switchboard – low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, the rated voltage
of which does not exceed 1000 V a.c. at frequencies not exceeding 1000 Hz, or 1500
V d.c.

Range
All activities are to be conducted in accordance with applicable specifications,
documented enterprise, legislative and/or regulatory requirements, and local bylaws.
Activities must also meet the requirements of the above in terms of personal,
product, and work site safety.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Receive and unpack switchgear equipment.
Range
equipment – large and/or heavy, fragile switchgear equipment.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Characteristics of equipment are identified in terms of weight, size, and fragility.
1.2
Material handling equipment appropriate to the task is located and used in a
safe and efficient manner.
1.3
Equipment is unpacked without injury to personnel or damage to components,
equipment, or the environment.
1.4
Packaging materials are disposed of appropriately in accordance with industry
practice.
Outcome 2
Manoeuvre switchgear equipment and switchboards safely.
Range
equipment – each of large, heavy, unstable switchgear equipment.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Equipment and boards are moved using handling equipment and techniques in
compliance with safety requirements and industry practice.
2.2
Assistants are coordinated efficiently and safely during equipment movement.
2.3
Equipment is placed securely after manoeuvring to ensure safety in accordance
with industry practice.
