Classification Diving > Diving - Recreational Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 4384, Scuba dive and perform rescues in open water to a maximum depth of 18 metres, and proof of 20 logged dives showing experience in navigation, and deep and night diving, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 2 Industry technical and safety criteria are specified in the training manuals of the agencies approved by the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (Sfrito). All practice must also comply with Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Act 1992 and the Occupational Safety and Health guidelines for Occupational Diving. 4 All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with Skills Active Aotearoa Limited SSB Code 101576 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 4398 version 4 Page 2 of 4 one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors, Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Scuba Schools International, Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques, International Diving Educators Association, or an equivalent, determined by Sfrito, that meets the requirements of the Recreational Scuba Training Council, the instructor must provide training in accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare for deep dives of between 18 and 40 metres. Evidence requirements 1.1 Deep diving plans establish no-decompression limits. 1.2 Deep dive plans meet industry technical and safety criteria. Range 1.3 Symptoms and first aid treatment for potential deep diving first aid problems are identified to industry technical and safety criteria. Range 1.4 personal well-being, environmental conditions at the site, surface intervals, experience and/or expertise of dive partner, buoyancy. nitrogen narcosis, decompression illnesses, barotrauma, hypercapnia, hypothermia, buoyancy control. Exposure protection and equipment selected meet industry technical and safety criteria. This unit standard is Evidence requirements expiring Outcome 2 Perform deep dives of between 18 and 40 metres. 2.1 Controlled descents and ascents using reference points as a tactile and/or visual guide. 2.2 Ascent rate does not exceed 18 metres per minute. 2.3 3 minute safety stop at 5 metres is performed on ascents. 2.4 Logged deep dive practice adheres to the dive plan. 2.5 Deep dive practice meets industry technical and safety criteria. Range tasks may include but not limited to – differentiation of object shape, simple knot tying and calculations on underwater slates. Evidence requirements 3.1 Exercises performed at depth demonstrate impairment effects of nitrogen narcosis. 3.2 Demonstrations at depth show pressure changes and colour absorption.
