Explanatory notes Version 4 was republished to correct the Standard Setting Body (SSB) name and the SSB Code. 1 The buddy system is where scuba divers dive in pairs while maintaining contact with each other at all times. 2 Industry technical and safety criteria are specified in the training manuals of the agencies approved by the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (Sfrito). 3 All workplace diving practice must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. All practice must also comply with Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001 and the Occupational Safety and Health guidelines for Occupational Diving. 4 All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Scuba Schools International (SSI), Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques (CMAS), International Diving Educators Association (IDEA), or an equivalent, determined by Sfrito, that meets the requirements of the Recreational Scuba Training Council (RSTC), the candidate’s instructor must provide training in accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency. Evidence requirements 1.1 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ diver propulsion vehicle (DPV) dive plan meets industry criteria. Range distance, navigation, descent rate, ascent rate, air supply, time, depth, no-decompression limits. 1.2 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients can explain maintenance of DPV in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. 1.3 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ pre-dive procedures for DPV meet industry technical and safety criteria. Range 1.4 battery, controls, seals, lights. Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ identification of potential hazards of DPV diving and remedial procedures meet industry technical and safety criteria. Range rapid descent, equalisation, distance, time, battery life, extended air time, no-decompression limits. Outcome 2 Instruct clients to perform DPV dives. Evidence requirements 2.1 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ ascents and descents are controlled and adhere to dive plan. 2.2 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ use of the DPV complies with manufacturer’s specifications. 2.3 Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients’ DPV dive meets industry technical and safety criteria. Range 2.4 ascent, environmental conditions, hazards, communication with buddy or team. Instruction includes assessment to ensure that clients manage an emergency according to industry technical and safety criteria. Range emergencies may include – entanglement, disorientation.
