This unit standard is for entry level learners in the beauty
therapy industry who will assist in a commercial beauty salon to
maintain the order of the salon.
People credited with this unit standard are able to maintain: the
cleanliness of the beauty salon; the levels of supplies in the
beauty salon; the laundry requirements of the beauty salon;
and the sanitation of tools and equipment in the beauty salon.
This is a core component of beauty therapy practice and
underpins performance in all practical aspects of the trade.

Explanatory notes
1
Definitions
Salon requirements refer to any policies, procedures, and requirements of the
company and/or workplace involved, and any ethical codes of relevant professional
management, which collectively provide a standard that applies to all competent
performances in this unit standard. It is assumed that such salon requirements exist
in all companies and/or workplaces.
Beauty salon means a workplace in which the candidate is employed or on work
experience.

Salon requirements must be adhered to for all aspects of this unit standard.

All performances in this unit standard must comply with the requirements of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.

Assessment against this unit standard will include evidence collected over a period of
10 consecutive scheduled working days. The 10 consecutive scheduled working
days should allow for, but not include, valid absences.

Assessment will take place within the commercial beauty salon where the candidate
is employed or on work experience.

In all dealings with clients, personal presentation, including personal hygiene, must at
all times be of a standard that complies with salon requirements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Maintain the cleanliness of the beauty salon.
Range
includes but is not limited to – floor, trolleys, chairs, therapy tables, reception
area, dispensary, stock area, rubbish bins, bathroom, skirting boards, therapy
rooms, dishes.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Cleaning duties are performed at the opening and/or closing of salon day.
1.2
The cleanliness of the salon is maintained throughout the day.
Outcome 2
Maintain the levels of supplies in the beauty salon.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The stock in retail area is replaced, cleaned, and rotated.
2.2
The levels of stock and consumables for use within the salon are maintained.
Range
may include but is not limited to – refilling dispensers, towels.
Outcome 3
Maintain the laundry requirements of the beauty salon.
Evidence requirements
3.1
The linen bins are emptied as required.
3.2
Cleanliness of laundry area is maintained.
3.3
Laundry is maintained for service requirements.
Range
may include but is not limited to – levels of linen maintained, linen
laundered and stored, laundry prepared for drycleaners.
Outcome 4
Maintain the sanitation of tools and equipment in the beauty salon.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Tools and equipment are sanitised as required.
4.2
Cleanliness of sanitisation areas is maintained.

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
