Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of basic colour theory, and match a paint colour by
eye in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Open. However it is recommended that people have passed
an Ishihara Colour Test, or equivalent, before commencing this
unit standard.
Explanatory notes
1
Definitions
Enterprise means an organisation where assessment is taking place, and/or where
the trainee is employed.
Enterprise procedures refer to the documented procedures used by the organisation
carrying out the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may
include but are not limited to – standard operating procedures, site safety
procedures, equipment operating procedures, codes of practice, quality assurance
procedures, housekeeping standards, charging of time and materials, management
of drawings and documentation, procedures to comply with legislative and local body
requirements.

Evidence requirements
1.1
All colours of the spectrum are named.
1.2
Primary colours are named, and the term secondary colour is explained.
1.3
The effect by which pigments produce visible colour, including black and white,
is outlined.
1.4
Recognised colour classification systems are named, and the principles of the
CIELab system are described.
Range
colour classification systems – Munsell, CIE (Commission
Internationale de l'Eclairage).
1.5
The terms colour strength, hue, and chroma are explained.
1.6
The effects of viewing environment on colour matching are described.
Range
1.7
viewing environment – artificial lighting, natural lighting, light box,
direct sunlight, shaded light, reflection.
The terms gloss, opacity and metamerism are explained, and their effects on
colour matching are described.
Outcome 2
Match a paint colour by eye in accordance with enterprise procedures.
Range
evidence is required for successful colour matching of ten enterprise products
representing a range of colours with varying gloss and opacity;
a further matched colour must be verified as successful using computerised
colour matching equipment (at conditions D65, 10º observer) and achieving a
CIELab system ∆ E of less than or equal to 1.0 for red and 0.5 for any other
colour.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Materials and equipment are prepared for colour matching.
Range
materials and equipment may include but are not limited to –
scales, colour standards, job specification, tinters, application
surface, application equipment, drying environment, colour
matching equipment, viewing environment.
2.2
The colour sample is produced.
2.3
Colour is compared to required colour standard.
2.4
Colour is adjusted to required colour standard.
