AGENDA Student Success Committee Meeting UH Maui College, Ka‘a‘ike 105cd June 19, 2014 10:30am-12pm 2014 ATD Annual Reflection Narrative Goals Goal 1. Increase Developmental math success Actions: Increase instructional time from 1 time per week (current) to 2 times per week in fall 2014 Add lecturing component to classes Developing more comprehensive tutor and faculty training Hiring 1 more full time permanent developmental math faculty Recruiting a cohort for a learning community including MATH 18/ENG 22/PSY 170 Developing implementation plan for Statway (Carnegie) with vocational disciplines Continued improvements to the MATH 18 Orientation Goal 2. Increase IT and IR capacity Actions: Discussion and vetting will occur at the Student Success Committee meetings to see if this can become a campus and budget priority to meet campus demands for data and research and related training Goal 3. Improve Budget Allocation Process Actions: Per WASC recommendations, budget allocations will be tied more closely to strategic planning improvements College priorities and will include broad participation strategic and budget planning including input from Academic Senate beginning summer 2014 Due diligence will be given to closing student success gaps, and use opportunities for reallocation of positions to improve programs and services and increase student success ATD Coaches’ Recommendations from March 2014 Visit: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Provide resources and institutionalize those interventions, especially NSO, that are moving the needle of success. In Process Place emphasis on improving student success, especially the success of Native Hawaiian students in all courses. The UHCC strategic plan calls for actions to improve the success of NHs. Continue to work on Dev math and college-level math courses, especially the learning strategies employed within these courses, to improve student success and to move students through the Dev math pathway more expeditiously. In Process Identify gatekeeper courses at the college and develop a cohort-tracking model to follow students through course sequences. Adopt a theme of sustainable, systemic change at scale, as opposed to adding more innovations and interventions. Expectations for the next coaches’ visit: 1. 2. 3. Report on the recommendations above Display data showing the trends for the effects of NSO, English’s new program, and math’s changes on student success Report on the 3-5 year success rates of all students and NH students in terms of success, retention, persistence, and completion, accompanied with an analysis of what the remaining barriers are and how they are going to be addressed. Particular attention should be given to the other gatekeeper courses (aside from English and math). 1 4. Call together all staff that have attended at least 1 ATD DREAM (aka Strategy Institute) and see if they are interested in joining the Student Success Committee or help working on bringing about systemic change at Maui College. All staff that attended DREAM Institute are involved in SPAM and/or SSC. Campus Strategic Planning Follow Up/Implementation Plan Here are the groups and areas of focus per SPAM notes for long term (5 year) and short term (1 year) from 5/16/14. More people will be recruited to join these groups. Student Success (Cathy, Deanna, Amir, Susan Nartatez, Ben, Kristine Korey-Smith) met on 6/9/14 for the first time: 1. Suggestion to have SSC look at all RFP innovations to decide if they should move forward to ATD Core Team Committee to request funding. 2. Suggestion to have SSC look at all RFP innovations that have received funding to see if they should be included as a budget priority for scaling. 3. ACTION ITEM Update-Institutionalizing NSO and/or prioritizing the filling of an FYE Counselor position and/or Retention Coordinator BG sent data regarding gaps in NH success vs. non NHs to committee in DEV ED, 2014 Annual Reflection Narrative Goals, expectations of ATD Coaches for their fall 2014 visit, Roadmap to success templates (Distance Learning) and NSO data to SPAM co-chair Sustainability of Resources/ Infrastructure (Michele, Refugio, David) Assessment and Improving the Quality of Learning (Eric, Kiope) Discussion from May SSC meeting: How do we involve all faculty but esp. adjunct faculty in best practices? Adjunct faculty are invited to faculty institute Can we make a budget priority be to include stipends for lecturers to get training? Community Needs and Workforce (Lee, John) Seamless UH System (Kulamanu, Deanna) Research and Innovation (Debasis, Amir) Action Item: Distance Learning-recruiting 10 participants to be part of a professional development as a six-week pilot, followed by fall mentoring Action Item Update -Pilot Lamakuhi: EARLY ALERT/STARFISH- Lamakuhi Action Item Update- Committee to update uses for Pritt Donation-(currently laptop initiative) Academy of College Excellence (ACE) - Kari N. is our campus rep for this event. UHCC system will spend $100k funds for system implementation. ACE FELI at Kapi‘olani Community College, Monday, July 28th to Friday, August 1st. The ACE Experiential Learning Institute (FELI) is five-day professional development experience designed for community college faculty, staff, and administrators; 12-13 attendees per college Participants will be expected to be present all 5 days from 9am-5pm. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Only Kaua‘i CC is NOT participating. Three of the colleges (KapCC, WinCC, and LeeCC) are committed to the full two-year program; UHMC only committed to FELI training pending funding.
