Campus Strategic Planning Follow Up/Implementation Plan
1. Suggestion to have SSC look at all RFP innovations to decide if they should move forward to ATD Core
Team Committee to request funding and/or if they should be scaled. ATD State Core Team-Did NOT
meet in June or July. BG asked Kamu that this topic be added to the agenda for the next meeting in
August. There are systems office issues re: innovations grant funding releases. Funding is not
always released in timely manner – affects the performance of programs funded.
2. Questions to keep in mind for SSC: How will this committee move forward in strategic planning
process? Where is the aligning with AtD priorities? What to advocate for, what the role of
committee is?
3. Priority-Institutionalizing NSO and/or prioritizing the filling of an FYE Counselor position and/or
Retention Coordinator
4. Discussed where we should start posting meeting notes, RFPs, to be able to share best practices.
Action: Laura updating SPAM website.
5. John Franks added SSC transformation details, SSC Notes and 2014 ATD Annual Report to UHMC
ATD web site.
6. Need to add Distance Learning too.
Update on SPAM Committee – asking committee members to complete a survey by 7/16 to establish campus
priorities that can be used to set budget priorities. The committee was tasked this summer with coming up with
priorities that can be used in budget process – a short-term pilot. In the future, the process will be over a longer
period of time, allowing for wide campus engagement. The 4 strategies from this group were in the list, plus
they were each part of the criteria that could be marked as relevant to a particular item. Meeting this afternoon
will look at survey monkey results from this pilot tool.

Action Item Update: Distance Learning Committee created the first cohort of the Distance Learning
Professional Development Program. The 6-week online training course began on July 7 for the 10
participants and 5 mentors.
Action Item Update: Pilot Lamakuhi: EARLY ALERT/STARFISH - Intensive training held. Looking at how to
roll out training for faculty and staff. Funding is ok for now - VPCC and Perkins. Announcements to
students needed.
Star is now official tool for students to plan for graduation. Aug 1 - Star will have capacity for ED
planning. Needs continual updates and checks for accuracy. All outreach centers will receive training.
Suggestion to re-visit Roadmap to Success template to help committees analyze whether it's a viable
project or not. Basic template was easy to use and useful.
Action Item Update: Committee to update uses for Pritt Donation – Laptop initiative - more info needed
to inform students. Need to meet with Ray re: UHF fund restrictions, person staffing the initiative
(Jessica). Looking at different ways to inform students. Flyer for NSO would be helpful (Derek will do
flyer).
Academy of College Excellence (ACE) - Kari N. is our campus rep. ACE FELI at Kapi‘olani Community
College, Monday, July 28th to Friday, August 1st. Lyn Arcangel, Title III, responsible for travel docs.

Miscellaneous
Mānoa Promise – starting fall 2015 - will be offering students who are accepted to Mānoa option to attend CC,
can come back to UHM after 24 credits, no additional application fee.
Sophomore status is now 30 credits (up from 24).
Change to installment payment plan - students with prior year balance will not be able to be on payment plan,
effective this fall. Apparently some students with a balance would continually enroll (then not have funds
withdrawn) and have built up considerable amount owed.
UHMC enrollment currently down 9.4%.
Banner pre-registration checklists - enhancements are being worked on. Adding phone numbers in fall ‘14.
Emergency contact #, relationship to student will be added for spring.
Student status update - still being worked on (being able to come back after one semester out without reapplication).
Centralized admissions moving forward, anticipated to begin fall ‘15. Student status update may be easier once
that is rolled out.
System looked @ data re: late registration and didn't find difference in achievement. Unclear what definition of
“late registration” was used. Success of students who enroll after classes start might be different from those
who enroll late, but before classes start.
Juli – applied for part-time student funds for child care - partnering with Imua Family Services. Proposed
program @ Imua would have 50% of children with UHMC student parents. Conditional approval has been
received, no final word yet.
Suggestion: Highlight Best Practices at SSC meetings. Success story from summer from Title III. 100% success in
MATH 103 - 5 students, 2 tutors, 5 weeks, also refresher the week before (190V), Friday reviews and activities to
reinforce concepts (190V). The refresher is an innovation that could be scaled easily per Kristine.
Title III-ENG 19/22 also 100% success rate. Instructor effectiveness, building relationships and sense of
community is key.
Scaling up? How do we share best practices with larger group? Discussion can help create student success plan,
how change happens. Need to be patient and respectful, conscious of resource issues.
Could invite Carrie Ann, Donna, Neil Stotts, to present best practices to this group. Shows effectiveness of
cohort models - includes potential for block scheduling, degree in 3 model. 1+1=done?
