Classification Niue Arts and Crafts > Niue Crafts Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Maaga variations are acceptable in meeting the requirements of this unit standard. Endorsement of village variations may be conducted by pulotu. 2 Definitions Advanced weaving techniques are processes used to achieve shape such as tapering, expanding and extending; Complex weaving refers to combinations of different weaving processes and advanced weaving techniques that result in decorations in woven articles and can include traditional and/or new patterns; Fakaholoaga refers to the process by which something is learnt or knowledge is transmitted; Hulu refers to the process of inserting materials for decorative effect; Maaga is any one of the 14 villages that the learner identifies with through either matrilineal or patrilineal lines, or self-identifies through acceptable fakaholoaga; Pulotu refers to Niue village or community recognised and/or appointed experts; Traditional refers to a specific body of knowledge and practice held by pulotu, which is imparted to learners through community resources such as cultural leaders and advisors; Weaving techniques are tia (close weave), lalaga (open weave) and fili (plaiting). Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate complex Niue weaving. Range two woven craft products of different types with decorations. Range craft products may include polu (bowl), pulou lau niu mata (hat), pulou kapi (cap), lili veliveli (round or oval table or floor mat).
