This unit standard is for people who are employed in the
fellmongery or leather industries and whose job is to prepare
skins for depilatory paint application and remove and pair-off
painted skins.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: wash and
dewater skins; sort skins; prepare skins for depilatory paint
application; remove and pair-off painted skins; demonstrate
team-work; and comply with organisational and statutory
environmental, and safety requirements.

1
Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Hazardous
Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Health and Safety in Employment Act
1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

Definitions
Organisational requirements – instructions to staff on policies and procedures which
are documented in memo, electronic or manual format and are available in the
workplace.
Operator – the candidate being assessed against this unit standard.

Wash and dewater skins.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Skins are washed to remove unwanted material in accordance with
organisational requirements.
Range

preservatives, contamination.

1.2
Excess moisture is removed from skins in accordance with organisational
requirements and tolerance specifications.
1.3
Skins are cooled to company-specified temperature tolerances in accordance
with organisational requirements.
1.4
The operation of washing, dewatering, and cooling equipment and facilities is in
accordance with organisational requirements.

Sort skins.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Skins are sorted, segregated, counted, identified, and recorded in accordance
with organisational requirements.
Range
2.2
recorded may include but is not limited to – wool length, skin
classes, numbers, defects.
Skins are loaded onto conveyors or barrows for processing in accordance with
organisational requirements.
Outcome 3
Prepare skins for depilatory paint application.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Skins are spread flat, square, and flesh side up in accordance with
organisational requirements.
3.2
Skins are centred and spaced on conveyor belts for paint application in
accordance with organisational requirements.
Outcome 4
Remove and pair-off painted skins.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Splashing and paint migration are minimised during removal of skins from
conveyor belts in accordance with organisational requirements.
4.2
Skins are paired off or folded in accordance with organisational requirements to
achieve maximum flesh to flesh contact with no contamination of recoverable
wool products.
4.3
Paired off skins are stacked or hung on poles in accordance with organisational
requirements to achieve maximum stability.

4.4
The number of skins in each stack or on each pole meets company tolerance
specifications.
4.5
Each stack or pole of skins is identified in accordance with organisational
requirements.
Outcome 5
Demonstrate team-work.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Tasks are completed within the time and space allocation determined by
product flow and organisational requirements.
5.2
The quality and completeness of tasks meet the operational requirements of
following co-workers.
5.3
Communication and feedback are provided to and requested from co-workers to
maintain and improve task and product quality.
5.4
Co-workers are not endangered through the operator's methods and
equipment.
5.5
Co-worker assistance is provided within the confines of product flow and
operator space.
5.6
Any machinery, equipment, and facility malfunctions are identified and reported
to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
5.7
Conflict resolution techniques are applied to minimise interpersonal differences
with co-workers which may adversely affect team performance in accordance
with organisational requirements.
Outcome 6
Comply with organisational and statutory environmental, and safety requirements.
Evidence requirements
6.1
Company supplied clothing and safety equipment are worn and used in
accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.
6.2
Work methods comply with specified organisational and statutory requirements
to minimise the risk of product contamination and injuries to the operator and
others.
6.3
Any unsafe conditions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in
accordance with organisational requirements.
6.4
Equipment, operator and work area cleanliness complies with organisational
and statutory requirements.
