Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the
purpose, structure, operations and regulatory responsibilities
for product examination of the New Zealand Food Safety
Authority (NZFSA); identify the legislative requirements for ante
and post-mortem examinations for petfood processing; and
describe the purpose, duties and responsibilities of accredited
examiners for animal product and material examination for
petfood processing.

Definition
For the purpose of this unit standard the words product and processing have the
meanings listed in part 1 of the Animal Products Act 1999.

Purpose and regulatory responsibilities of the NZFSA are described in terms of
maintaining product fitness for purpose in terms of wholesomeness, human
health safety and animal health, false and misleading labelling, and market
access.
1.2
Structure of NZFSA is described in terms of standards and compliance
management.
1.3
Operations of NZFSA are described in terms of market access, standard
setting, accreditation of persons and systems audits.

Identify the legislative requirements for ante and post-mortem examinations for petfood
processing.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Legislative documents covering the requirements for ante and post-mortem
examiners are identified and explained in terms of relationship with the Animal
Products (Specifications for Products Intended for Animal Consumption) Notice
2006.
