Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this entry-level qualification is to provide the Fire
Protection industry with people who have the skills and
knowledge to install and maintain hand operated fire fighting
equipment.
Graduates will work under limited supervision, and in accordance
with the New Zealand Building Code, current Standards,
regulations and ordinances, and other internationally accepted
standards.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Provide advice to clients on the distribution, installation,
and maintenance of hand operated fire fighting
equipment.

Survey buildings, prepare for, and install appropriate hand
operated fire fighting equipment.

Report on and maintain the integrity of passive fire
protection when installing hand operated fire fighting
equipment.

Manage appropriate records and reports.
-
Service and maintain hand operated fire fighting
equipment (not including pressure testing and refilling).
-
Work safely on and around the immediate work area.
-
Use skills and knowledge of active fire protection systems
and inspection procedures to effectively contribute to the
performance of the team.

(Level 4) [Ref: 2581]; or
New Zealand Certificate in Fire Protection Systems
Technology (Inspections) (Level 4) with strands in Fire
Detection and Alarm Systems, and Fixed Fire Protection
Systems [Ref: 2579].
Graduates will be equipped to work as installers/fitters of hand
operated fire fighting equipment.

has an approved programme of study or programme of
industry training leading to the qualification.

Evidence must include the following:

continue to meet current industry needs.

the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2)

General conditions for
programme
This qualification will typically be achieved through a combination of
on-job training and assessments, and distance learning (e-learning
and/or correspondence).
Hand Operated Fire Fighting Equipment consists of fire extinguishers,
hose reels, and fire blankets or shields often used to extinguish or
control fire in emergency situations. They are primarily used to
respond to fires in the early stages of development.
The context for ‘contribute effectively to the performance of a team’
relates to system installation where each person is expected to define

their technical strengths and apply them as relevant to ensure the job
is completed.
Programmes leading to this qualification may include some or all of
the standards listed in the conditions column below. Use of these unit
standards to meet the outcomes of this qualification is not mandatory.
Should unit standards be specified in a programme of study or
programme of industry training leading to this qualification, the
explanatory notes section of the unit standards concerned must be
considered as there may be legislative and health and safety
requirements such as the New Zealand Building Code, Industry
Standards, regulations and ordinances, and Territorial Authority bylaws.

Transition information
Replacement information
This qualification replaced the:
-
National Certificate in Hand Operated Fire Fighting Equipment
(Level 3) [Ref: 0568].
The last date for assessment against the replaced qualification is 31 December 2020.
The last date for entry into the replaced qualification is 31 December 2017.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
