purpose:
This unit standard is for people who wish to enter or are
employed in the automotive repair industry. People credited
with this unit standard are able to prepare vehicle wheels for
balancing, and balance a wheel and tyre assembly off a
vehicle.

element 1
Prepare vehicle wheels for balancing.
performance criteria
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task according to legislative
requirements.
Range:
personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment, vehicle
safety.
1.2
Wheel is removed from the vehicle without damage to the vehicle, wheel, and
threads of the wheel nuts and studs.
1.3
The wheel and tyre condition is checked, and its compliance with the Land
Transport Rules is determined.

2.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task according to legislative
requirements.
Range:
personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment, vehicle
safety.
2.2
The necessity for wheel balance is established from the supervisor.
2.3
The static and dynamic balance of the wheel assembly is checked and adjusted
to bring the balance within acceptable limits as detailed by the balancer
manufacturer.
2.4
Wheel is replaced on the original position on the vehicle, and nuts or securing
studs are tensioned according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
