Catalog Description: Content of the course will include a study of rate of change and functions including
linear, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial and rational functions, function notation, composition, inverse
and combination of functions.
Prerequisites: A score of 19 or above on the mathematics portion of the Enhanced ACT, or a score of 390
or above on the quantitative portion of the SAT, or a score of 43 or above on the ASSET Intermediate
Algebra test, or a grade of C or better in Math 0903. This course can not be taken for credit after taking
a math course with a number 2701 or higher.
Purpose: Math 1113 is a course which will satisfy the general education mathematics requirement
assuming a grade of C or better is earned. The purpose of the course is to develop critical thinking ability
and to prepare the student for further study in mathematics.
Text/Materials: College Algebra in Context, 2nd edition, by Harshbarger and Yocco. 2007. The
publisher is Addison Wesley. Math XL Access code (packaged with a new text and with some used texts
and available separately).
Assessment Method: Grading will be based on the following:
5 unit exams (100 points each)
30 Mini Quizzes (6 pts. each, worst 3 dropped
24 Homework ( 5 pts. each)
Final Exam
Total points possible
Grading scale:
= 500 points
= 180 points
= 120 points
= 200 points
= 1000 points
900 - 1000 points – A
800 - 899 points – B
700 – 799 points – C
600 – 699 points – D
599 and below - F
Attendance and Participation: Students are much more likely to be successful in a class if they are
present. We will be using PRS clickers in class to register your attendance and to provide immediate
feedback to problems worked in class. I believe you will find that these clickers will make it easier for you
to stay focused and attentive to the lessons. It is essential that you bring your clicker to class with you
every day.
Attendance: Attendance is required. Roll will be checked each class meeting using the PRS clicker.
After the 3rd absence, your name will be reported to the advising center’s Early Warning staff. After the 6 th
absence, you will be dropped from the course with an F* if your grade is below 60%.
Homework: Homework will be assigned and discussed daily. Most of the homework for this class will
be done and graded on the computer, using Math XL, web-based software which goes along with the
textbook. Information regarding getting registered on Math XL will be given in class. For full credit on
quizzes and exams, your work must be completed neatly and in pencil. Please, do not use ink. You must
show all necessary steps. Your work must be turned in on time. No late homework assignments will be
accepted.
Tests: Tests will be announced at least 2 class periods in advance. If you know in advance you will miss a
test, you must make arrangements with your instructor to take it early. Under extreme circumstances ONE
makeup test may be taken. A test must be made up within one week of the original test. The instructor
will determine what constitutes extreme circumstances.
Cell Phones: Please turn your cell phone off at the beginning of class. If you are expecting an important
call during class, discuss it with me before class. Do not let your cell phone be a problem!!!
Cheating: Cheating will result in a grade of a zero on that assignment. Continued cheating may result in
expulsion from the course with a grade of F. Cheating will not be tolerated.
