Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the apparel and
fashion manufacturing sector with people who have the skills and
knowledge required to work as fabric cutters.
This qualification is intended for people new to the industry, or to
further develop the specific technical skills and knowledge of
people already employed as fabric cutters.
Graduates will be capable of accurately and efficiently cutting
fabric and preparing cut work for production in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to:

Set up and cut single and multiple lays of fabric, and
prepare cut work for production through the interpretation of
pattern requirements and job specifications

Lay up a range of fabrics to meet cutting requirements and
job specifications

Maintain fabric cutting equipment to defined technical
specifications.
Graduates of the Advanced Fabric Cutting optional strand will
also be able to:

On completion of this qualification, graduates may progress onto
the New Zealand Diploma in Apparel and Fashion Technology
(Level 5) [Ref: 2606]. Graduates wishing to progress to
supervisory or management roles may choose to complete a
diploma or degree level qualification in business management.

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work as Fabric
Cutters in the apparel and fashion manufacturing industry.

This qualification may be awarded by any organisation with an
approved programme of study or industry training programme
leading to this qualification.

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the

continue to meet current industry needs.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that

This qualification replaced the following national certificates:

The last date for entry into the replaced qualification is 31 December 2017. The last date for assessment
against the replaced qualifications is 31 December 2019.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case by case basis.
