Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the marine industry
with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team,
unsupervised, to refit or fit out vessels.
This is an entry level qualification for people intending to enter or
who are already working in the marine sector, in the refit or fit out
of vessels.
Graduates will have the specialised knowledge and skills to
construct and install cabinetry including equipment, and fittings,
for a marine vessel.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

safety and minimise potential hazards and environmental
risk in a boat building work environment

objectives in a boat building work environment

apply specific industry knowledge and terminology to
communicate effectively; and behave in a professional
manner with colleagues, managers, and customers

select and use a range of products, materials, hand and
power tools and plant and equipment relevant to common
tasks for marine cabinetry and cabinetry installation

apply knowledge of materials and techniques to construct
cabinetry for a marine vessel interiors
-
install cabinetry including equipment and fittings, for a
marine vessel.
This qualification may build on from the National Certificate of
Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 1, 2, or 3.

Replacement information
This qualification and qualifications Ref: 3057 and Ref: 3086
replaced the National Certificate in Boatbuilding (Level 4) with
strands in Marine Cabinetmaking, Composite Sparmaking, Alloy
Boatbuilding, Marine Rigging, Interior and Exterior Marine
Painting, Composite Boatbuilding, Steel Boatbuilding, Wooden
Boatbuilding, Marine Systems Engineering, Metal Sparmaking,
Composite Production Trailer Boats, and Alloy Production Trailer
Boats [Ref: 0877].
People currently working towards the expiring national qualification may choose to complete that
qualification or transfer their results to the replacement New Zealand qualification.
The last date for entry into programmes leading to these replaced qualification is 31 December 2016.
The last date for assessment against the replaced qualifications is 31 December 2018.
