Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the furniture
industry with people who have the skills and knowledge to work
as operators in the industry.
Graduates will be able to provide input into workplace safety,
work within furniture production systems and operate equipment
efficiently under limited supervision.
This qualification is designed for people already working in the
industry or people wishing to enter the industry as an operator.
The strands recognise operational skills and knowledge in either:
Cabinetmaking, Furniture Finishing, or Upholstery.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
Apply an understanding of hazard and risk management,
and improvement and workflow management principles,
when carrying out their role.
Graduates of the Cabinetmaking strand will also be able to:
Assemble a range of furniture and components
Operate equipment and machinery and use resources to
produce furniture components
Create drawings, cutting lists, and material quantity
documentation for use in furniture manufacturing
Graduates of the Furniture Finishing strand will also be able to:
Prepare and carryout furniture finishing task to meet
production specifications.
Graduates of the Upholstery strand will also be able to:
Operate equipment and machinery and use resources to
produce upholstered products

Education pathway
This qualification can build on from the New Zealand Certificate
in Furniture (Level 2) with strands in Cabinetmaking, Furniture
Finishing, and Upholstery [Ref:2780]
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in
Furniture (Level 4) with strands in Cabinet Making, Computer
Numerical Controlled Machinery (CNC), Furniture Finishing, and
Upholstery [Ref: 2782].
Employment pathway
Holders of this qualification will be equipped to work in the
furniture industry in operational roles to, depending on their
strand, either:

make cabinetry and furniture
-
finish furniture, or
-
upholster furniture products.
Qualification specifications
Qualification award
This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has
an approved programme of study or industry training
programme leading to the qualification.
The certificate will display the logo of the NZQF and may
display the name and/or logo of the awarding body.
Evidence requirements for
assuring consistency
All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes
that lead to the award of the qualification are required to
participate in a consistency process scheduled by NZQA.
This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate’s
achievement of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds
for qualification outcome achievement, and areas for
improvement.
To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification
graduate profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their
own evidence in a high level report.
Evidence will include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the
qualification meet graduate profile outcomes
-
Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes
continue to meet current industry needs
-
A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that
graduates meet the graduate profile outcomes
-
Any other relevant evidence as appropriate

Credit transfer and recognition of
prior learning arrangements

Organisations seeking approval to award the qualification are
expected to have Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) or
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment processes in

Credit transfer will be automatic where assessment standards
are used for assessment within programmes of study or training
leading to this qualification.

Transition information
Replacement information
This qualification replaces the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3)
with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Furniture Making, Frame
Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref:
1503]
The last date for entry into the replaced qualification is 31 December 2017. The last date for assessment
against the replaced qualification is 31 December 2019 when the qualification will be discontinued. From
that date no results can be reported against the replaced qualification.
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements by 31
December 2019 or transfer their results to the replacement qualification.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case by case basis.

Republication information
Version 1 of this qualification was republished in June 2016 to extend the last date of enrolment into
programmes leading to the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands in Finishing, Machine
Operator, Furniture Making, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref:
1503] from 31 December 2016 to 31 December 2017.
