Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide hairdressing salon
owners and managers with individuals who can research
colouring techniques and perform specialist colouring services in
a hairdressing salon.
Graduates will benefit by gaining a credential that may provide
further employment opportunities.
This qualification is part of a suite providing a pathway through to
being qualified as a professional stylist and on to advanced
specialisations in the hair industry.
This qualification is for qualified hairdressers working within the
hairdressing industry who wish to gain skills and knowledge in
presenting advanced hair colouring techniques.
Outcome Statement
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
Apply advanced knowledge to complete a wide range of
advanced hair colouring work, reflecting current and emerging
trends, within a commercial hairdressing salon.
Education pathway
This certificate builds on level 4 qualifications for professional
hairstylists.
Employment pathway
Graduates of this certificate are able to work as advanced stylists
within a commercial hairdressing salon, or as a self-employed
stylist in a variety of settings.

Evidence requirements for assuring
consistency
All Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) either arranging
training or delivering programmes that lead to the award of
the qualification are required to participate in a consistency
process scheduled by NZQA.
To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the
qualification graduate profile outcomes, TEOs are required
to produce evidence, this may include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the
qualification are achieving graduate profile
outcomes.

Evidence of effective processes to identify changing
training needs of industry.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that
graduates meet the graduate profile outcomes.

Any other relevant evidence as appropriate.
The purpose of the managing consistency event is to:

review evidence associated with achievement of
qualification outcomes at the level of the
qualification.

identify issues or opportunities associated with
outcome achievement.

Minimum standard of achievement

The minimum standard of achievement required for the
award of the qualification will be the achievement of all the
graduate outcomes in the graduate profile.
There are no grade endorsements for this qualification.

Learners must be a qualified hairdresser prior to entry to
programmes leading to this qualification.

Conditions for programme
Programme delivery must ensure that assessment of the outcomes
structure
requires candidates at all times to follow safe practices that ensure
personal safety and the safety of clients, staff, and the environment.
Conditions for programme
context
Programme delivery must ensure that for all practical hairdressing
skills assessment must happen on live models unless specified that
mannequins may be used.

Where programmes leading to this qualification do not include the
optional unit standards set out below as specific conditions relating to
the qualification outcomes, programme developers should consider
these, to inform the minimum requirements for the programme
content.

Transition information
Replacement information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Hairdressing
(Advanced Colouring) (Level 5) [Ref: 1602].
The last date of entry in to programmes leading to the replaced qualification is 31 December 2016 when
the replaced qualification will be designated expiring.
The last date to meet the requirements of the replaced qualification will be 31 December 2017 when the
qualification will be discontinued. From that date no results can be reported against the replaced
qualification.
People currently working towards the replaced National qualification may either complete the
requirements by 31 December 2017, or transfer their results to the replacement New Zealand
qualification.
